Director's Notes: When I finally finished The Caped Avengah, it dawned on me that, excluding school projects, I hadn't directed a narrative short in two years. I was busier than I'd ever been: doing camera, producing, editing, and even directing a 45 minute documentary. None of it was directing with actors, none of it was narrative, and none of it was comedy. They weren't films; they were videos.
I called Brian and Corey. We had to shoot. Immediately.
On a late Sunday afternoon we met up to shoot... anything. After walking around aimlessly, shooting whatever came to mind, we came across the bridge. It was a prop bridge, normally adding to the appeal of the shrubbery and garden that surrounded it during the summer months. Immediately I knew concept and how make the punch line out of revealing what is, a very, very small bridge. Corey suggested it should be something really redundant and not-special that makes them cross the bridge, like seeing a friend on the other side. The rest of the dialogue was improvised with every take. If the video seems a bit fractured it's because every take was completely different, and I had to construct the majority of the conversation during editing. It's amazing what you can get sometimes without a script or any pre-production. Total guerrilla style.
In the end, it's a good little piece. A good start for 2008 and the many shorts to come, though I do assure that they won't be as guerrilla. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. We'll see. - John Baxter
