Director's Notes: Often times as a writer, I find that, in the various stages of writing, rewriting, blocking, storyboarding, rehearsing, shooting, and repeatedly rewatching in post, most jokes tend to lose their lustre. I, for one, often find myself questioning the power of a joke after all these processes. But, for all my concerns with "Buy, Buy Love" (the biggest of which being my own skill as a performer), I never lost faith in its punchline... and it was a joke that I had written nearly four years before shooting it! I think the reason this film works is its simplicity. I also think that the section of downtown Cambridge that we chose has a sad, seedy quality to it that immerses the characters in the amber glow of the street lamps and eclipses them with neon bar signs and shadowy back alleys. There's also a 'Do Not Enter' sign over the prostitute's left shoulder, which I found endlessly amusing on set. And, for gritty realism, the cast and crew were actually harassed by drunk locals throughout the shoot. But I also made some rookie mistakes as a result of trying to work on both sides of the camera at once. For example, though I cut the film in such a way to try and disguise it, I am chewing gum the entire time. And, so, while I may never again attempt the writer/director/actor/producer/editor/ composer thing, I'm very pleased with how this one turned out. I hope you enjoy "Buy, Buy Love". - Daniel Warth |
