Writer's Note: When I was first approached by Paul to join the offline, he mentioned how he wanted me to make a new song. It took some time to figure out what I wanted the song to be about, eventually I decided I wanted to make a joke love poem/song for a celebrity. After running several choices through my head, I KNEW who it would be about - none other than the lovely Hilary Duff. From there, the title was pretty obvious, “Why Don’t You Call Me? (Hilary Duff)”. However, I removed her name as not to ruin the joke right off the bat. David "Daniel" Warth was someone I wanted to work with on this song from the get-go as well, once he was game we quickly hammered out the first draft on his piano. The rest of the song was completed in Cortney Keywan's basement studio. So, hopefully you enjoyed this song we all worked on. It was a lot of fun to make. I can only hope you catch yourself singing it out loud in the near future, who knows, maybe Hilary will as well. - Lindsay Lewis
Director's Note: Lewis is not new to writing silly songs. In college he had done quite a few. All of them were received with varying levels of lament from our fellow classmates; only a few of us got what he was trying to do. The fault didn't lie in the material, rather the execution. I guess he recorded his songs through Garage Band, although I doubt Steve Jobs would ever admit his product was capable of such, um, "raw" sounding material. Coincidentally the music videos suffered the same drawbacks. I recall one being Lindsay sitting in the middle of a dark room, with the camera running circles around him, mimicking the inside of a tornado. Avant-garde it wasn't. Perhaps I shouldn't speak until we do a proper video.
That being said, one thing was clear to me, if Lindsay was going to make a new song, it should be recorded under the right circumstances. I got him and Dan together with Cortney, who I knew from high school and who also had a pretty robust studio in his basement. Neither I, nor Cortney, had any idea what to except. I recall apologizing in advance, saying, 'This will take, like, 2 hours and we'll be out of your hair'. Well it took longer much longer. Didn't help that Cortney's band had also shown up that day to experiment with some $5000 amp they had rented. What I didn't except, was to return from recording ‘The Rewind’ to find Cortney's entire band helping out with the production. Everything from proper drumming to back-up vocals were lovingly added in by a group of people who had no reason to help us. Simply put, they liked the song – A good sign I thought.
As for the video, nothing is staged. All of the footage is from the day of recording. I knew that I wanted an “artsy” shallow depth of field, however, the HVX doesn't allow for that without a proper lens adapter. Instead, I would usually find myself up against a wall, zooming in as close as possible to trick the lens into a shallow depth. This explains a lot of the camera shake. Although, I found it added to the more extreme parts of the song, so I just figured I would tell people I was shooting my version of 'Best of You'. Given how no planning went into the shots (I did lift one shot of Cortney counting down Lindsay from the 'Times Like These, Acoustic' video) I’m fairly pleased with how well this video turned out. It could have turned out quite boring, however, given the people who recorded this song, boring would have been surprising. - Paul Stachniak
Lyrics: My love, why don’t you call me?
I wrote you a song, from the heavens above
I need you to hear me, from my heart and my soul,
The winds are changing, it’s time for you to come home.
Hilary Duff, why… don’t you call you me?
I know you’re in there, I can hear you breathing
I’ll send you roses on your birthday, everyday, until the end of time.
Hilary D-U-F.
You don’t know what it’s like when a man loves a woman
Cause you ain’t never been a man, as far as I know.
I need you to hear me, from my heart and my soul,
The winds are changing, it’s time for you to come home.
Hilary Duff, why… don’t you call you me?
I know you’re in there, I can see you sleeping,
I’ll send you roses on your birthday, everyday, until the end of time.
Hilary D-U-F.
(Bridge)
They say love is blind, that’s a lie, cause I see you every night on my TV before I go to sleep at night. You know, our love is strong. I can’t wait to fly to Hollywood, or wherever you’re shooting a movie cause I’m going to wrap you in my arms and take you away on a trip to heaven. Two tickets on a plane. Miami? Doesn’t matter where. You can give me a restraining order, but, baby, you can’t restrain order…
You’re pretty at the age of eighteen and you were even better before,
I’m standing at your door, knock knock, who’s there? Our love.
I need you to hear me, from my heart and my soul,
The winds are changing, it’s time for you to come home.
Hilary Duff, why… don’t you call you me?
I know you’re in there, I can see you in the shower,
I’ll send you roses on your birthday, everyday, until the end of time.
Will you marry me tonight?
